In Persian, *Baraye* (برای) means "for" or "because of." But since 2022, it has come to represent much more than that.

Following the death of Mahsa Amini—a young Iranian woman who died in police custody after being detained for allegedly failing to comply with the dress code imposed on women—Iran saw a wave of protests under the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom."

It was against this backdrop that Iranian musician Shervin Hajipour created *Baraye* , a song built from messages shared by Iranians on social media. Each verse captures a reason for desiring change: the right to freedom, women's rights, the possibility of living without fear, and the hope for a different future—one where each of us can be whoever we want to be, regardless of where we were born.

The song became a symbol of the protests and transcended Iran's borders. Shervin Hajipour was detained by Iranian authorities for releasing it—simply for writing a song about the right to freedom—and his story became an example of the power a song can hold when it gives a voice to the unheard.

Baraye thus brings together many voices of young people and women fighting for their freedom and for the right to be who they are and who they want to be 🫶🏼
